Almost Heaven, West Virginia!

Another wild and wonderful adventure to our adjoining state, West Virginia! For our anniversary this year I wanted to go leaf peaping, and after some research, Pocahontas County in WV was an area we had not gone to and I booked an air bnb the night before we left. I don't like planning last minute trips but it turned out just great.

So on Friday afternoon we headed to Red Spruce Knob to hike which was fairly close to our air bnb in Slatyfork, WV. This hike was interesting with lots of moss as ground cover and you felt like you were in Narnia. The pictures don't really do it justice. It was an easy hike and it felt like the twilight zone the entire time.

We drove the scenic byway several times and the fall foliage was definitely at its peak. Such beautiful colors this year.

We had dinner at Old Spruce Brewing at Snowshoe mountain resort. Cute place with ski vibes for sure.

The next morning we ate breakfast at our Air bnb (which was at the Elk River Inn) and headed out for the day to complete several easy hikes. We first drove to Droop Mountain and checked out the battlefield. Nice views from the overlook there.

Then we headed to Watoga State Park and did the Arrowhead Trail. This hike was more moderate and took you to the Ann Bailey observatory tower which was kind of like a log cabin. Even better views from this hike of the fall foliage.

We continued our journey over to the Cranberry Glades wetlands area. Easy and short hike along the boardwalk to view the bog area. I believe this is one of the few in WV.

After visiting that area we hiked Falls of Hills creek. Easy trail but lots of stairs from the middle to lower falls. Highly recommend viewing all 3 falls. The upper falls had not much of a view at all.

We weren't sure if we were going to be able to fit all those hikes in without feeling tired but we sure did. We also felt we had enough juice left to hike High Rocks off the scenic byway. This was the longest trail of the day (just over 3 miles) but it was also easy. Very nice views at the end.

After all of our hikes we headed back to our air bnb but on the way we stopped at Greenbriar River Grille for dinner. Busy spot on the river with homemade bread! Decent dinner spot. The hot tub felt real nice after our busy day!

Sunday morning we made breakfast again at our Air bnb and soaked in the hot tub before leaving. There was frost on the grass so it was a chilly morning.

We did our first horseback riding with Crossroads Farms and it was fun! Olivia and Tyler were great to learn from. My horse Annie was great and even had me bobbing up and down as she trotted. Lol.

After our horse riding we stopped next door at Snyder Farms and did a quick hay ride to pick our pumpkins. We also swung by Still Hollow Distillery and really enjoyed their spirits.

It was a great anniversary weekend visiting a new part of WV and doing new activities together!

The fall colors were definitely another highlight of the trip, I don't think I have seen them this brilliant in awhile! Definitely better in person than what the pictures show so get out there and explore!

Cheers!
