Harpers Ferry, WV...what an interesting spot! We had the most beautiful weather from April 15 to 17 of 2022. The Maryland Heights trail is what you absolutely need to do, even though the trail is kind of a butt kicker. I was mad my Garmin watch died so didn't get the full recording, but this is what all trails says.
The first half of the trail is all up, up, up, then you go down towards the viewpoint (it's fairly steep) and then you have to remember it's all up, up again but then you sigh in relief cause you remember all of the ups you did at the beginning 😉 Really nice views at the top. Definitely moderate and not easy.
We also did the loop around the river and town. Beautiful wildflowers everywhere ! Virginia bluebells shown in the pic below.
We saw a very large snapping Turtle hiking along the river.
Harpers Ferry and Antietam battlefields are rich in history and I suggest you take a moment to research the battles if you are unaware of those!
We also hiked waverton cliffs and it was not as difficult. Once again beautiful views of the river and the American red buds were in bloom. View from the cliffs:
After our hike at Maryland Heights we actually got ice cream in town (parking is a bit difficult btw) and headed back to our room at the Antietam overlook farm to get ready for dinner. What a special place owned by great people. The owner brews his own beer and it's also available in town at Captain Benders.
We decided to get dinner at the Guide House (heard great things) and the bloody Mary's and cocktails were on point. Definitely worth checking out! See below pic.
Oh and apparently a light beer with an old bay rim is called a Baltimore Martini.
