Always a great extended weekend trip to our neighboring state of West Virginia. I just found out there is an app you can download and win prizes for checking in at WV waterfalls. Here's the link to that :
Part 1 of The trip:
Stayed at Greenbrier State Forest cabins for 3 nights. They're really nice and cute! Nice town with plenty to do. The Greenbrier Golf course is right around the corner and well known , even PGA tours there.
The hikes:
-Cascades falls, about an hour and a half from our cabin. Really nice set of falls with plenty of parking and people swimming. Not the easiest hike if you take the lower creek trail first, which we did. Lots of wet rocks as steps! The higher trail is the way to go down back to parking lot for sure.
-Hanging Rock trail, not to be confused with the observatory one which we do later in the evening. Really nice mountain views on this hike and not hard at all. We had to do some Bush whacking though 🤣
-Hanging Rock Raptor observatory , another hike on the easier side of moderate to an observatory that tracks raptors. Loved this spot. We had it all to ourselves for sunset. Going back after sunset in the dark creeps me out but we had plenty of light.
There is a log book to sign in.
For the last 2 days of our trip we stayed in Ansted at an air bnb.
-Sandstone Falls, New River gorge National park: we have been to this park before it was designated as a national park, but we never went to these falls, so this was a first for us. Lots of people fishing and an easy hike!
-Longpoint Trail, New River Gorge National Park, a return hike to this easy/moderate trail that brings you to a picturesque point of the new river bridge. It was muddy but there are paths around. A must do at this park.
Breweries: Big Draft and Bridge brew works
Restaurants: Swinging Bridge, Don Rizo
****hopefully secret sandwich society opens soon!!!
Cheers and happy hiking!
